Proletarier:
Das seit dem 18. Jh. bezeugte Wort für »wirtschaftlich abhängiger, besitzloser Lohnarbeiter« geht auf lat. proletarius zurück, das den Angehörigen der untersten Bürgerklasse bezeichnet, der dem Staat nur mit Nachkommen dient. Das lat. Wort ist eine Bildung zu dem zum Stamm von lat. alere »‹er›nähren, aufziehen« (vgl. ↑ Alimente) gehörenden Substantiv lat. proles (< *pro-oles) »Sprössling, Nachkomme« (vgl. 1↑ pro..., ↑ Pro...). – Dazu stellen sich Proletariat »wirtschaftlich abhängige, besitzlose Arbeiterklasse« (19. Jh.; aus gleichbed. frz. prolétariat) und die Rückbildung Prolet (19./20. Jh.), zunächst als abschätzige Bezeichnung für den Proletarier, dann in der Umgangssprache allgemein im Sinne von »ungehobelter, ungebildeter Mensch« gebraucht.
